I wanted to bring up a topic that is very near and dear to my heart (and, obviously, my career): coworking. I love the creativity and collaboration that happens within the walls of coworking offices and I want everyone else to understand it too. Now, I don’t know where you’re from, but here in Ol’ Wyoming this “coworking thing” is a new idea to most so I wanted to take some time to explain the what it is and the benefits it provides.
Agreeing with the immortal words of Mr. Dylan (which I almost always do), the times are a’ changing. We are constantly in the midst of transformation in the world around us. And if necessity is the mother of invention, then ooh, boy! This is the time for innovation in the ‘standard workplace environment’! Who among us is not sick and tired of being confined to a teeny little cubicle for 40+ hours a week?!
Our digital era has made it possible for new business models and unique office formats to be successful. I mean, 40% of the workforce will be composed of freelancers, independent contractors, or soloprenuers by 2020.1 That is a huge chunk of the labor pool trading in a cubicle for a couch!
But be warned: the downsides to working from home (in our PJs) are already showing themselves. The lack of collaborative creativity, networking, and engagement combined with the isolation and distractions of home have become an issue.
So with more options for working remotely popping up every day, where do we find the balance between work and home? Luckily, that is where coworking comes in! Coworking offices have become super attractive to millennial-aged professionals and soloprenuers.
YOU CAN WORK OUTSIDE OF A CORPORATE SETTING + STILL HAVE:
Effective Time Management
Networking and Social Connections
Optimal Work/Life Balance
Its already been proven that being part of a coworking community allows workers to focus, meet their deadlines, and increase productivity while also being more relaxed, confident and healthy. These communities foster creative collaboration across all genres of business and professions which lets you benefit from your fellow coworker’s knowledge while reciprocating with your battle-tested guidance.
You’ll find all you need in these funky office spaces. Since they include all of the basics to complete your work (Wi-Fi, printer/scanner, break room, etc.), you don’t have to worry about all of that overhead needed to outfit your own private office. Add in bonuses like game rooms, complimentary Continuing Ed sessions, in-house yoga, and social events and millennials are jumping at the opportunity to join a coworking community.
Still need convincing? Okay, here are some numbers: The average coworking space in the U.S. hosts 110 members and 70 workstations in about 10,000 sq. ft. of space. That’s huge! Old warehouses, historic buildings, and factory floors are being converted into innovative coworking offices with themes from airy eco-conscious living to gritty, industrial motifs.
While coworking communities have the same structure across the board, they are as individually unique as the members that comprise them. These shared-use offices have popped up in a majority of cities within the U.S. and they are creating a happier, more engaged and more powerful workforce. So in a world of change, are these communities here to stay? We think…yes.
